Ferrara is a small, big, city!
From the region springs several of the famous food classics such as parmigiano (parmesan cheese), parma ham and the noble balsamic vinegar.
The city was founded by the legendary family
d 'Este and consists of both medieval and renaissance buildings, high-end shops, exhibitions, museums, galleries, beautiful squares, film festival, cathedral, city wall and an abundance of gourmet restaurants, bars, trattorias and osterias and the city is also known for its many events, food festivals, markets and concerts.
Ferrara is located approx. 40 km from Bologna on the flat Po plain north of the Apennines in the Emilia-Romagna region.
You can fly to Bologna, rent a car or hop on the train from the airport and arrive in Ferrara in half an hour.
The city is divided into two: the old town, which consists of medieval and renaissance buildings, and then the newer and more modern town, which winds along the outside of the city wall.
The 10 km long city wall surrounds the old town and is in itself worth a discovery. The wall is UNESCO-protected, incredibly well-preserved and today serves as a green, lush and recreational area for the city's population.
Here you can ride your bicycle, jog, walk, have a picnic or just sit on a bench and enjoy the atmosphere and the cool breeze under the big old trees of the wall.
The center of Ferrara is car-free and it is therefore obvious to get around the city by bike just like the locals.
It is easy to rent city bikes. Cars are welcome outside the pedestrian streets, where it is easy to find parking options.
