FERRARA AND SURROUNDINGS
The Emilia Regio Romagna is an exciting region and there are endless experiences here!
The easiest way to get to Ferrara is by plane to Bologna. From the airport there is 1/2 hour drive by car or train.
Emilia Romagna offers many cozy towns, beautiful nature and exciting markets, where you can find wonderful oils, cheeses, olives, wines, meat, ceramics and other good specialties ...
CITIES:
From Ferrara's local train station you can reach cities such as Venice (1.5 hours) or Bologna (30 min). It is obvious to visit these two cities on day- trips where you can see a lot (leave the car in Ferrara). Maybe end the day at one of the many wonderful ice cream bars / Galetaria) in Ferrara in the evening.
BY TRAIN:
The trains are clean and neat and it is easy to get around at the stations. You buy tickets at the newsstand and they are kind enough to help you to the right platform.
FERRARA:
Ferrara city was added to the UNESCO list in 1995 due to its special renaissance character, the city's cathedral and impressing Castle but also due to the spectacular nature around the Po plain, which i.a. offers one of Europe's largest wetlands with a completely unique bird and animal life. The area is about an hour's drive from Ferrara.
PO-PLAIN:
Visit the Po plain in the evening where you can experience the sunset over the Po plain to the sight of hundreds of pink Flamingos going to rest. That's a great sight! In addition, some of the region's best fish restaurants are nearby. However, it can be difficult to get a table, but the price is low and the food tastes wonderful, so line up and book a table and go for a walk along the quay while you wait. We have several times eaten two adults - two three dishes, a bottle of wine and subsequent coffee for about 80 euros in total! The fish is freshly caught in the Adriatic Sea and it is nice to sit and watch the fishing boats and harbor life while you eat.
MINI VENICE: The cities of Ravenna and Comacchio (TRE PONTE) are just an hour's drive from Ferrara. Comacchio is also called mini Venice and here are cozy canals, which wind between the town houses, and you can enjoy the beautiful nature and town from the water side. Very cozy and recommendable!
BEACHES:
You reach the coast in 1/2 hour by car (Lido di Spina) and here are some beautiful beaches with super service and good restaurants. There are even dog beaches if it should entice and there is a large selection of beach hotels and B & Bs. However, the sea is not as breathtaking as the Mediterranean but the Adriatic is certainly beautiful and the beaches are well maintained and clean. You have to accept that it costs to rent a sunbed and parasol (about 5-10 euros). On Sundays there are most people - the other days there are more relaxed. Italians go to the beach restaurants for both lunch and dinner - and there is something for every budget and taste.
GARDA LAKE:
Wonderful Lake Garda is approx. two hours from Ferrara by car (here we often go on weekend trips). After 1,5 hours drive south, you see the mountains of Tuscany rise… So there are many wonderful options for every taste and budget.
